What is the Eat Out to Help Out scheme?
The Eat Out to Help Out scheme is an initiative launched by the UK Government offering diners 50% off, capped at £10 per head when they eat in at a restaurant or other food establishment.
The scheme runs from Monday 3 August until Monday 31 August and is valid all day Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday as part of the government’s attempts to get the economy moving again.
Most importantly for establishments, all discounted bills can be claimed back from the government as long as you’ve registered for the scheme online at the gov.uk website.
This is an amazing opportunity for you to drive increased footfall to your establishment on traditionally quieter days and get your business moving again.
Effectively, the government is giving you up to £10 per head for every person who comes through your door on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday in August, so you’d be mad to miss it!

Who is eligible for Eat Out To Help Out?
All establishments that sell food for what the Government has called “on-premises consumption” are eligible to apply for the Eat Out To Help Out scheme.
Basically, if you sell food and drink to customers who then sit in your premises to consume that food and drink, you can register for the Eat Out to Help Out scheme.
This might include:
Pubs and bars where food is served
Restaurants and cafes at leisure centres, attractions, and holiday parks
Workplace and school canteens
Dining rooms with members’ clubs
While this list isn’t necessarily exhaustive, as long as you meet the following criteria outlined by the Government, you should be eligible for Eat Out To Help Out.
They have announced you can register if you:
Sell food for immediate consumption on your premises
Provide your own dining area or you share a dining area with another establishment for eat-in meals
Were registered as a food business with the relevant local authority on or before 7 July.

Who isn’t eligible for the scheme?
Eat Out To Help Out has been specifically designed to encourage diners to start eating out at their favourite establishments post-lockdown. Unfortunately, this means that if you exclusively offer takeaway food or drink you cannot register.
Similarly, the government has outlined a range of other circumstances where businesses will not be eligible to register.
Hotels that only provide room service
Dining services, such as those offered on a cruise
Catering services for private functions
Mobile vans or food trucks (even if you have seating outside your van or truck)
How do you register for Eat Out To Help Out?
HMRC has created a simple online form at gov.uk to make it as quick and painless for restaurants and other establishments to register.
The form should only take 5 minutes and you must complete it yourself. You cannot get an agent to complete it on your behalf.
To sign up you will need to have a Government Gateway user ID and password. You should already have these if you have used the Government’s online services for Tax Self Assessment, Corporation Tax, or VAT. If you haven’t, you can create one easily enough.
Once you’ve registered, you’ll be able to claim back the money and be refunded within five working days. What’s not to love?
What does the Eat Out To Help Out discount apply to?
Any food or soft drink ordered all day Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday between 3 August and 31 August is eligible for the 50% discount, up to a maximum of £10 per diner. That includes VAT too. Packaged snacks that will be consumed immediately on the premises also count.
However, the discount isn’t applicable to alcoholic drinks, tobacco products, food, or drink that is to be consumed off-premises. For example, takeaway food.
